Gibson Kirk Hammett Greeny 1959 Les Paul Standard
Description
When Peter Green bought the famous Les Paul with the serial number 92208 in a London music store in 1965, nobody could have guessed that this guitar would one day become one of the most famous instruments in music history. Green paid a whopping 140 pounds at "Selmer", the most popular guitar store in England at the time, where Clapton also bought his ES-335 and Jimmy Page his first Les Paul.
A little later, Peter Green replaced Eric Clapton in John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, first temporarily and then permanently. By this time, his Les Paul had already undergone its first major repair. The coil of the defective neck pickup was rewound, but this was only almost successful. When rewound, the polarity of the coil was reversed, which resulted in an "out of phase" sound when both PUs were connected together. Green didn't seem to mind much, as this is exactly the sound you hear on his first recordings with the Bluesbreakers.
The Les Paul remained his main guitar when he founded "Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac" a little later. The most iconic song from this period is probably "Albatross", released in 1969 and recorded with 92208.
In the 70s, Green came into contact with Gary Moore, who opened several Fleetwood Mac shows with Skid Row. Moore, who was musically heavily influenced by Clapton and Green, bought "Greeny" for just 160 pounds and has since played it on many well-known albums such as "Still Got The Blues". In 2006, Moore ran into financial difficulties and had to sell his famous Les Paul to a collector who gave it to Joe Bonamassa for a show at the Royal Albert Hall before it ended up in the hands of Kirk Hammett in 2014.
At the end of the 90s, Gibson recreated this guitar as the "Gary Moore Model". At the time, it was unaged and at a very reasonable price. After being acquired by Kirk Hammett, 92208 became extremely well-known and was first reproduced very precisely in the “CollectorsChoice” series in an edition of 100 pieces before Gibson launched the series presented here in 2022, which leaves nothing to be desired.
