Inspired by the success of the famous Les Paul, Gibson's president Ted McCarty made 1958 a daring attempt to create guitars with a futuristic design. The result was the "Modernistic" series, which consisted of three radical guitar designs: the "Flying V", the "Explorer" and the "Moderne". But time was not prepared for such daring designs, so the Flying V and the Explorer failed and soon disappeared from the market. And the Moderne did not go into production at all. That could have ended the whole story, but things have turned out differently: The 1960s brought many social and musical changes, and such famous musicians like Albert King, Dave Davis and the legendary Jimi Hendrix discovered the extraordinary Flying V for themselves. Since then, the Flying V has been used primarily in Rock and Heavy Metal music. Just think of Andy Powell (Wishbone Ash), who even immortalized the Flying V on a record cover, or Rudolf Schenker, guitarist of the famous Scorpions. Thus, the Flying V finally found its deserved place in the history of Rock 'n' Roll as a guitar icon.
As a tribute to the legendary 1958 Flying V model, an exquisite reissue is now being released from the Gibson Custom Shop, which resurrects the flair and sound of the original in an excellent way. Body and neck of this 1958 Flying V Reissue are made of selected, very light mahogany. A fingerboard made of Indian rosewood complements the mahogany in an excellent way and gives the Flying V an excellent vibration behavior. Two Custombucker Alnico III pickups are installed, as they are exclusively used for Custom Shop models. These come damn close to the much sought-after sound of the original PAFs!
All in all, this is an extremely successful reissue of the 1958 Flying V model, which can keep up with the best originals in terms of both sound and optics. The beautiful walnut finish, refined with all-round gold hardware, make this 1958 Flying V a real gem.
