Gibson Explorer 1958 Mahogany Reissue GH VOS #80979

Inspired by the success of the famous Les Paul, Gibson's president Ted McCarty made 1958 a daring attempt to create guitars with a futuristic design. The result was the "Modernistic" series, which consisted of three radical guitar designs: the "Flying V", the "Explorer" and the "Moderne". But time was not prepared for such daring designs, so all three guitars oft he "Modernistic" series failed and soon disappeared from the market. With the rise of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal in the 70s, such extraordinary designs were suddenly in demand, so that from 1976 on new re-issues of the Gibson Explorer regularly appeared onto the market. And it found new lovers: Eric Clapton, Rick Derringer, The Edge from U2, Joe Bonna Massa, James Hetfield, Matthias Jabs and Bill Kelliher from Mastodon, just to name a few.

Here's a great re-issue of the original 1958 Explorer from the Gibson Custom Shop. Instead of the Korina wood used at the time (which is a tropical mahogany subspecies), selected mahogany was used for the body and neck. A fretboard made of Indian rosewood with "Pearloid Dot" inlays and an extremely pleasant "Authentic Chunky C" neck profile round off the overall picture of this extraordinary 1958 Explorer from the Gibson Custom Shop. And the Custombucker Alnico III pickups installed in the Explorer Re-Issue come damn close to the sound of the original PAFs! Just made for uncompromising Hard Rock and Heavy Metal!

It's fact that you can probably never find an original Explorer from 1958 – but you can get this excellent reissue from the Gibson Custom Shop, which conveys the magical sound and the "look & feel" of the original in a convincingly authentic way.
