This limited edition of 700 pieces has a special story to tell! Behind it is wood supplier Michael Reid, with whom Paul Reed Smith has been working since 1980—even before his company was officially launched. The S2 Special Semi-Hollow presented here utilizes a wide range of exceptional woods. For example, the top is made from "Peroba Rosa." The density of this 100-150-year-old wood, combined with the semi-hollow body, gives the instrument a unique sound that is powerful, yet warm and full. The Cuban mahogany used for the necks was purchased in Puerto Rico. Some of this wood comes from trees blown down by Hurricane Maria in 2017. The Guaribu Preto fingerboards come from Brazil, where this durable wood was used to support houses.
These woods have retained their natural color and are varnished with a satin nitro finish. Any nail holes, wear, or discoloration have been left intact in the top wood to showcase its history.
"Wood is a crucial element of our guitar-making tradition. In addition to their unique woodwork, this Limited Edition instrument retains many of the standard specifications of the S2 Special Semi-Hollow, such as the 22-fret neck with a 25-inch scale and the humbucker/narrowfield/humbucker pickup configuration. A 5-way blade switch and two mini toggles allow the humbuckers to be played, creating twelve different pickup combinations and enabling endless tonal experiences."
