With the release of the first Stratocaster in 1954, Fender met customers' requests for special colors. Most of them were well-known musicians who wanted their Strat in red, black or even gold instead of the usual 2-tone sunburst. However, it wasn't until 1962 that Fender officially listed these custom colors in a catalog and made them available for everyone to order. The colors almost exclusively came from the current Cadillac color catalog. Not a bad choice!
Here's a '63 reissue in "Graffity Yellow". Fender charged a surcharge for this optional custom color as well as for the pickguard in Brown Shell. Similar to "Shelmon Pink", "Graffity Yellow" was not very popular in the 1960s, which is why it is now one of the rarest colors and is traded at a correspondingly high price on the vintage market.
The model shown here has a "sorted for lightweight" body, which gives this Strat a comfortable weight of only 3340 grams. The hand-wound 60's pickups, together with a treble bleed, ensure the appropriate transmission of the great basic tone.
