When Eric Clapton assembled his famous Stratocaster "Blackie" in 1970 from 3 vintage models that he had previously been purchased cheaply, it inadvertently became one of Fender's most famous advertising media. Clapton played this Strat on stage and in the studio almost without exception until 1987, until it went into well-deserved retirement and was auctioned off at Christie's in 2004 for just under US $ 1 million.
The Clapton-Strat became Fender's first signature guitar in 2001 and is still in the range to this day.
