Although some models were already manufactured in 1953, 1954 is considered the birth year of the groundbreaking Les Paul Custom. The Tune-O-Matic bridge, invented by Gibson President Ted McCarty, was installed here for the first time. The single-coil pickups (Custom P-90 Soapbar & Alnico Staple) were replaced by humbuckers in 1957, but remained popular due to their crisp and tight sound and were used again and again throughout Gibson's later history.
