Since our luthier Daniel Ott met the Fender Master Builder Ron Thorn at NAMM 2019, Ron has built some very interesting instruments for us. Here is another masterpiece from Thorn’s hands: a 64 Heavy Relic Stratocaster in the gorgeous color Candy Apple Red.
Thorns Aging unmistakably shows its own signature, which is shown (among other things) in the very fine and authentic "crackling" of the nitro lacquer. There are hardly any deeper quirks and notches in the body, here it differs significantly from e.g. a Gregg Fessler. The "well-used" back of the neck and the headstock, which are processed with an unbelievable amount of attention to detail, are also always a pleasure in his work. Take a look at the photos!
"Wow" is also the tone of this unique Strat. Stevie Ray Vaughan once said that he knew at first glance that his No.1 sounds fantastic when he saw it on the wall in the store. A Thorn-guitar may have to be played dry first, but then she will own you! The Tomatillo pickups hand-wound in the Fender Custom Shop transmit this tone perfectly and with a certain extra that is difficult to put into words, but generates a certain addictive potential. This is exactly how a Strat must sound!
The features of this great instrument are rounded off by a very evenly drawn "Sorted For Dark Rosewood" fingerboard with 6105 narrow tall jumbo frets and a perfect weight of 3215 grams.
This guitars are exclusive, one-of-a-kind pieces and are therefore so popular. There is always a part of individuality from the master builder inside this noble guitars. And that's how it feels - not an anonymous off-the-shelf instrument, but a very special piece of handcraft with its own character!
