In a word: dream guitars with high potential!

It all started with a singing Cowboy ...

The history of the Gibson SJ-200 goes way back to the 30s of the last century. The prototype of the "Super Jumbo" was made by Gibson in 1937 especially for Ray Whitley, a Hollywood star known from cowboy movies. Appropriately, the presentation of the impressive SJ-200 took place during a rodeo in Madison Square Garden, which unexpectedly resulted in a huge response. Because of this, Gibson decided to start series production of the SJ-200 in 1938. Due to its extraordinary sound, it was soon given the characteristic nickname "King of Flat-Tops". By now the SJ-200 has long since achieved icon status and found countless followers among famous guitarists from all music genres, such as Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, Arlo Guthrie, Neil Young, John Lennon, Jimmy Page, Ron Wood and Noel Gallagher, just to name a few.

M2M SJ-200 Guitar-Place Order

In order to pay tribute to this icon among flat-top guitars, Guitar-Place decided to order a very special version of an SJ-200 in the Gibson Custom Shop as part of the "Made to Measure" program. Only the very best and hand-selected tone woods should be used here. Here are the tonewoods in detail and why we deliberately chose them:

Top wood: Thermally aged red spruce

The American red spruce originates from the Appalachian Mountains and has become an extremely rare tree species due to forest fires and clearings. It is an excellent tonewood and is used exclusively for high-quality acoustic instruments due to its excellent vibration behavior.

Back and sides wood: Fiery flamed maple

It's well known that maple is one of the most frequently used tonewoods for acoustic guitars due to its excellent tonal characteristics. Unlike normal maple wood, flamed maple is very seldom found due to its growth defects and is highly sought after by musicians. Flamed maple is characterized by a yellowish-beige base color, which is traversed by brownish lines (so-called "flames"). Depending on the characteristics of the flames, the term "tiger stripes" is often used. The very first time you look at this fascinating wood, your heart will spontaneously go in flames!

Neck wood: Classic 2-piece maple

In fact, our conscious choice of high quality maple for the neck material is something of a historical link between the past and the present. Since the beginning of the instrument making, this well sounding tonewood has been a permanent component and is the first choice for many musicians yesterday and today. Maple fans even say that in every maple neck there is a piece of that vintage flair hidden, which revives the feeling of the early years of musical awakening.

Fingerboard wood: Indian rosewood

Along with maple, rosewood is the absolute classic when it comes to the fingerboard. In terms of structure and sound, Indian rosewood comes closest to the coveted but protected Brazilian rosewood. That is why we made a conscious decision to use this wood. Indian rosewood has a chocolate to violet brown color and reddish-black stripes. Indian rosewood has round, strong and very harmonious sound characteristics.
