In 1961, the Gibson SG replaced the Les Paul Standard, which at the time was considered as too bulky. "SG" stands for "Solid Guitar" and was Gibson's answer to the emerging Californian competition. Because of its easy playability it was nicknamed "The Fretless Wonder" and quickly became an icon of Rock music. Famous SG players are Angus Young, Tony Iommi, Frank Zappa among many others. The Gibson SG is available in several versions: As SG Junior, SG Special, SG Standard or in the luxurious form as SG Custom; optionally with P-90 or humbucker pickups and with Vibrola.
